Preview how a page may appear in Google before publishing a change. Fetch metadata from a URL or edit the fields manually and compare desktop and mobile snippets.

Watch the progress bars: Google displays titles and descriptions by rendered width, not by character count.

―――

what a title tag is

The title tag is the text inside the HTML <title> element. It appears in the browser tab and commonly becomes the clickable title in search results.

Describe the page precisely, put the primary concept early, stay consistent with the H1 and keep the rendered width around 600 px to reduce truncation.

―――

what a meta description is

The meta description is the summary configured in a description meta tag. It commonly appears below the title and URL in search results.

Write for the user, make the page’s value clear, keep it around 920 px and include a useful call to action when appropriate.

―――

how they influence CTR

Ranking position determines how often a result is seen; the snippet helps determine how many impressions become clicks. Clear, relevant wording can make a lower-ranked result more compelling.

why Google rewrites snippets

Google may rewrite a title or description when the configured text does not serve a specific query well. It can use the H1, headings, anchor text or another visible passage.

Keeping the title, H1 and page content aligned—and avoiding stuffing or excessive length—reduces unnecessary rewrites without guaranteeing that the configured text will always be used.

how to analyze performance

Start in Google Search Console. Pages with high impressions and below-site-average CTR are strong candidates for a snippet review, especially when they already rank well.

External CTR benchmarks provide context, but expectations vary with query intent, SERP features, brand recognition and market. Evaluate each page against its own query mix.
